Shalom Hostels has been based on the need to provide good quality housing and accommodation exclusively to working women and women students. The rooms are available in sharing, and air-conditioned/regular, managed by a full time warden and security.
Food, Eateries and Joints:
Food outlets are plenty in Velachery - the notables being Hot Chips, Karaikudi in Taramani link road, Ratna Coffee house in the Velachery bye pass and Kumarakom near the junction offers Kerala food.
Fresh home made vegetarian and non-vegetarian food will be arranged for residents wishing to limit their food expenses. There is also a common kitchen for residents’ use.
Shopping
Dress materials, clothes and tailors, super markets are plenty in Velachery and this place is full of activity during week ends. Velachery is slowly developing as another shopping hub of South Chennai.
Weather
Weather in Chennai ranges from cold November – January, to very hot and humid March – June, with temperatures reaching 40 C+. You may require AC during summer.
Water
Chennaites usually experience water shortage during summer. Yet we are never short and even provide hot water, 24/7.
Lockers
Residents can avail lockers from us for safe keeping of valuables.
Laundry
Common use Washing Machines are available for resident’s use.
Entertainment
Computers, internet access and phones for communication and TV and news papers for recreation should make the stay complete.
Transport
Shalom is an ideal accommodation for those working or studying in and around Thoraipakkam (3 KM), Pallikaranai, Velachery (3KM) and Medavakkam (4 KM) and there are direct bus services.
If you are working anywhere near Tiruvanmyur (Tidel Park), Adyar, Mylapore or even Parrys Corner you can travel by the Mass Rapid Transport System(MRTS).The monthly pass costs Rs 120 offering unlimited travel from 5AM to 10 PM. Services are frequent (once every 10 min) during peak hours
MRTS service is fast, efficient and comfortable. Velachery to the Beach Station takes just 25 minutes whereas by road it takes about 60 minutes or more depending on traffic hours.
The Velachery terminus is three KM away from the hostel and conveyance can be arranged to the terminus. Velachery is a major intersection in the south and frequent buses are available to every other parts of the city.
We also provide vehicle drop and pick up to the nearest bus and rail station on demand.
At Shalom we are still learning how best to support women coming to Chennai and trying to address their accommodation needs as best as we can.
